Let’s face it. One of the reasons you bought your American Legend home was the spacious closets! Over time, as the seasons change and you’ve added more (and more!) to your wardrobe, it may be time for a “closet cleanse.” It’s time to grab a glass of wine, rewatch Marie Kondo for inspiration and clean out your closet. Here are American Legend Homes’ top tips to help you get started.
1. Set a date. You may think this is silly but the thought of cleaning out your closet can be overwhelming. You probably already know this as you’ve been putting it off. So, mark it on the calendar. Send the kids to a neighbor’s house for a playdate/overnight stay, encourage your husband to make a tee time at The Lakes at Castle Hills or the Golf Club at The Tribute, and jump right into the closet!
2. Take everything out. We know. This sounds scary but it really is the best way to clean out the closet. This allows you to see EVERYTHING you have. I’m sure there are a few items that got wedged in between others and you’ve completely forgotten about them!
3. Clean the closet. Now, you’re probably thinking “isn’t that what we’re doing?” but we mean CLEAN THE CLOSET. Grab a swifter duster and some Lysol wipes and give it a little love! This will give you a fresh dust-free area to work with.
4. Sort your clothes. Make three piles: keep, toss and donate. Pick up each item one at a time, inspect it and put it into one of the piles. Toss items that are in bad condition, stained or have holes. Donate items in good condition that you don’t need or haven’t worn in a while. If you’re having trouble, you can channel your inner Marie Kondo and ask, “does it spark joy?” Don’t second-guess yourself.
5. Refill your closet. You did it! You’ve done the hard part. Now, take your “keep items” and hang them back up in your closet! While you’re at it take the time to thoughtfully organize your closet. Better Homes and Gardens has great tips for organizing your clothes by category.
Once you’ve refilled your closet, discarded the items in the toss pile and collected the items for donating, look around. You have your dream closet back! The kids are on their playdate, your husband is out golfing and you have the entire house to yourself! Treat yourself! We recommend filling your oversized tub with your favorite bath bomb, grabbing a glass of wine and binging your favorite tv show, or finally starting that book you’ve been wanting to read. Relax and enjoy yourself in your spa-like bathroom. You earned it!
